Position Overview:
A global specialty insurance provider is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel to support its growing Accident & Health (A&H) business. This role will provide day-to-day legal support across a range of commercial, underwriting, and operational activities, with a strong focus on stop loss products. The position is ideal for a practical, solutions-oriented attorney with a solid foundation in the A&H space and a strong understanding of the stop loss market.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal support for the A&H team, with a focus on stop loss insurance offered to employer groups.
- Partner with business and underwriting teams to develop and support new and existing products, distribution arrangements, and key strategic initiatives.
- Draft and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including insurance policies, third-party administrator (TPA) agreements, producer agreements, and service provider contracts.
- Advise on general insurance matters including marketing, claims handling, and partnerships.
- Support cross-functional collaboration with compliance, actuarial, and claims teams to ensure aligned legal guidance and risk management.
- Monitor industry trends, competitor activity, and changes in law that may impact the A&H or stop loss business.
- Work closely with senior legal leadership to align legal strategy with broader business goals.
Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- At least 7 years of relevant legal experience, including in-house or law firm work in the insurance industry.
- Strong experience with stop loss insurance is required.
- Solid understanding of the A&H market, including product design and distribution.
- Ability to provide clear, business-friendly legal advice in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with self-funded employer health plans.
- Familiarity with captive insurance arrangements or alternative risk transfer structures.
- Exposure to international A&H markets is a plus.
