Our client, an AI-native specialty MGA/MGU, is building a US Senior Living liability program from the ground up — writing primary and excess GL/PL for SME skilled nursing and assisted living operators on Lloyd’s capacity. They’re hiring a Senior Underwriter to serve as the technical core of this program.
This is a hands-on seat with genuine authority — day-to-day underwriting of SNF and ALF risk paired with real ownership of the pricing platform itself. You’ll work alongside the program lead and appointed actuary to calibrate risk selection and pricing as the book grows, rather than simply applying rules set by others. The Program Lead owns market strategy, distribution, and relationships — this role owns the underwriting and the platform behind it. For a senior underwriter who wants a direct hand in building a program in a demanding specialist class, this is a distinctive opportunity.
What You’ll Own
- Day-to-day underwriting of primary and excess GL/PL for SME skilled nursing (SNF) and assisted living (ALF) operators
- Calibration of the underwriting platform — refining parameters, adjusting governance-score weights, and working directly with the actuary’s loss-cost and governance-predictor output
- Underwriting authority up to $3M aggregate primary and up to $5M excess on both SNF and ALF (quotes peer-reviewed initially)
- Risk selection and pricing driven by venue, severity, and operator-quality judgment
- Underwriting discipline — declining business outside appetite and holding the line on rate and terms
What You Bring
- Demonstrated SNF/ALF GL/PL excess underwriting experience with a track record of profitability
- Deep command of the class: CMS quality, staffing and survey data, venue/severity dynamics, operator-quality assessment, primary and excess structures
- Genuine comfort with technology and AI — able to reason about a data-driven pricing model and work within a platform to improve it
- Underwriting integrity and independent judgment, including willingness to decline business and hold terms under pressure
- Distribution relationships are a plus
Scope
- In scope: Primary and excess GL/PL for SNF and ALF, including memory care
- Out of scope initially: Hospice, home health, and CCRC (program may expand into these later)
- No claims responsibility — underwriting-focused role in the first binder period
