Our client, a premier provider of captive insurance management and alternative risk transfer solutions is seeking a Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO). The position will define underwriting strategy, drive portfolio profitability, and ensure discipline across captive insurance lines, focusing on Commercial Auto and General Liability.

Job Duties Include:
The CUO operates at the intersection of high-level strategy and technical execution:
- Strategic Risk Governance: Establishes and refines the organization’s underwriting philosophy and risk appetite statements.
- Portfolio Loss Control: Takes full accountability for loss ratio performance and implements cycle management strategies to maintain profitability across different market conditions.
- High-Level Approvals: Acts as the final referral point for complex or high-exposure accounts that exceed the authority levels of lower-tier underwriters.
- Reinsurance & Capacity Management: Leads negotiations for reinsurance treaties and manages relationships with fronting carriers and capital providers.
- Audit & Compliance Leadership: Manages the internal underwriting audit framework, ensuring that all files adhere to regulatory filings and internal quality standards.
- Digital Transformation: Partners with data and engineering teams to integrate predictive modeling, rules engines, and automated underwriting tools.
Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in finance, Business Administration, or a related field (preferred).
•15+ years of underwriting experience in commercial lines insurance, with specific expertise in Commercial Auto and General Liability, excess and enterprise risk.
•7+ years of underwriting leadership experience, including managing teams, setting strategy, and driving portfolio outcomes.
•Strong understanding of insurance company governance, compliance, regulatory frameworks, and financial drivers.
•Proven track record in underwriting profitability, pricing adequacy, and risk selection.
•Exceptional analytical, decision-making, and communication skills.
•Experience working within or closely with a captive insurance company (pure captive, group captive, RRG, or hybrid structures) preferred
•Familiarity with alternative risk transfer, reinsurance structures, and fronting arrangements.
•Advanced degree (MBA, M.S. in Risk Management) or professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, AU, or ARe a plus.
