Compliance Counsel – Insurance Brokerage

Our client, a rapidly growing Insurance Broker is seeking two Compliance Counsel remote positions:

#1 Benefits Compliance Counsel 

This role is essential to the organization’s strategic growth, providing the compliance expertise necessary to support talent development strategies and ensure the success of the company’s internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Advise the organization and its affiliated entities on complex legal matters related to employee benefits compliance.
  • Provide ongoing guidance to internal stakeholders to ensure continuous adherence to evolving employee benefits laws and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain a library of educational materials, including training presentations, alerts, newsletters, and checklists to keep employees and management informed of regulatory changes.
  • Manage and maintain a centralized digital repository for all regulatory content and compliance resources.
  • Translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable language for use in internal compliance education and corporate communications.
  • Assist with specialized compliance projects related to the company’s own internal benefit plans and structures.
  • Research and remain current on the latest regulatory shifts, including federal and state laws and relevant case law, to assess their impact on the company and its clients.
  • Provide continuous guidance to internal teams to ensure operational alignment with new or changing regulations.
  • Support various departmental projects and initiatives as assigned by senior leadership.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) from an accredited law school is strongly preferred; significant directly related experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Active membership in a U.S. state bar is preferred for legal-track candidates.
  • 3–5 years of regulatory compliance experience, specifically in healthcare or employee benefits law (candidates with a JD/LLM and relevant internships/clerkships may be considered with fewer years of experience).
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information effectively.
  • Strong analytical skills with a proven ability to assess risk and make sound, practical business decisions.
  • Advanced legal research and writing capabilities, including the interpretation of federal and state regulatory analysis.
  • An interest in working creatively and leveraging emerging technologies, such as AI, within a compliance environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel to partner locations or team meetings as required.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.

#2 Insurance Compliance Counsel

This role is essential to the organization’s strategic expansion, providing expert legal guidance on insurance licensing, corporate governance, and privacy regulations. The successful candidate will work to mitigate risk and ensure all business units adhere to evolving state and federal legal standards.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and interpret evolving state and federal insurance regulations and licensing requirements to ensure company-wide adherence.
  • Draft, review, and update standard operating procedures and internal policies to maintain a robust regulatory framework.
  • Manage and respond to inquiries, audits, and investigations from regulatory authorities on behalf of the company and its affiliated entities.
  • Coordinate with external counsel on compliance-related issues and keep senior management advised on all pending or threatened actions.
  • Assist with the expansion of a corporate compliance program and provide legal guidance across various business units and insurance programs.
  • Manage periodic risk assessments and internal audits to identify potential compliance issues and develop effective mitigation strategies to reduce exposure.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, such as IT and Operations, to ensure the implementation of effective compliance programs and controls.
  • Serve as a liaison with external vendors and assist with monitoring and evaluating those ongoing relationships.
  • Provide legal support for enterprise data privacy and information governance initiatives.
  • Assist in managing risks associated with corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships, with a focus on compliance due diligence.
  • Conduct legal reviews of cross-functional contracts to support enterprise priorities and multi-department initiatives.
  • Lead, manage, and develop direct reports as required, ensuring effective performance and alignment with organizational goals.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • At least 5 years of relevant legal work experience, specifically within the insurance industry.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • Experience effectively leading, managing, and developing professional staff.
  • Ability to travel to various partner locations or team meetings as needed.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future.
